About This Book

Unter dem Stichwort Expressionismus-Debatte(n) widmet sich das Heft der Grundvoraussetzung des Gegenstands der Zeitschrift: der Frage, was der Expressionismus ist bzw. welche Relevanz und welcher Wert dem Begriff zukommen. Darüber hat man im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts immer wieder diskutiert – berühmt ist vor allem der Positionsaustausch linker Schriftsteller*innen im Exil 1937/38. Daran ist der Hefttitel angelehnt, aber bewusst in den Plural gesetzt, um auch weitere Auseinandersetzungen um den Expressionismus zu thematisieren. Dazu gehört die programmatische Ausrichtung 'ihrer' Kunst durch die expressionistischen Akteur*innen selbst; nicht zuletzt betrifft dies die Wahl des Namens "Expressionismus". Zusätzlich zu dieser historischen Dimension setzt das Heft dazu an, selbst eine neue Debatte über Wesen und Wert des Expressionismus anzustoßen, u.a. was die Frage nach der 'Einheitlichkeit' der Strömung über die verschiedenen beteiligten Kunstrichtungen, ihre genaue zeitliche Verortung und ihre Nachwirkung betrifft.Neben der Behandlung der 'ursprünglichen' Expressionismus- Debatte im Exil enthält das Heft Beiträge sowohl über die historische Profilierung des Begriffs zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bei August Brücher, Siegfried Kracauer und im Film als auch zur späteren (internationalen) Rezeption der Strömung, namentlich in Belgien und in der Ausstellungspraxis des New Yorker Museum of Modern Art.
