A supply chain is a complex system for service provision, which often has a global structure. The strong networking in such a system and the focus on efficient processes make it susceptible to unexpected events. These can have disruptive effects that jeopardize the ability to perform the entire supply chain. In addition to these disruptive ones, operational uncertainties must also be taken into account. Both the interrupting events and the continuously occurring fluctuations can be a risk or an opportunity for a supply chain. In order to achieve competitive advantages or to maintain the performance of the system, the processes in a supply chain must be designed to be agile, resilient, robust and flexible. The present dissertation develops a conceptual frame of reference for coping with uncertainties in supply chains. This brings together existing approaches of supply chain management and enables a holistic view of how to deal with uncertainties in service networks. The empirical part of the thesis looks at the tactical-operational quantity planning in a supply chain and its contribution to the development of flexibility potential. In addition to a simulation-based analysis, operational practice is taken into account with the help of expert interviews. This makes it possible to make a research contribution to the management of uncertainties in supply chains and to derive concrete recommendations for action in this context.
