Richard Löwenherz, ein europäischer Herrscher im Zeitalter der Konfrontation von Christentum und Islam : Mittelalterliche Wahrnehmung und moderne Rezeption (Volume 8)
About this book
The present volume of collected articles originates from a series of lectures organized by the Centre of Medieval Studies of the University of Bamberg in 2016. It presents Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199) as a ruler in the era of confrontation between Christianity and Islam. The articles shed light on the rise of Richard to the English throne and on his relationship with King Phillip II of France, on Richard's captivity in Germany and on the perception of Richards as crusader in Western and Eastern sources. Additional articles explore the problem of granting protection to refugees in the Islamic world and the development of the idea of jihad up to the time of Richard's reign. A special focus is placed upon the later reception of Richard the Lionheart in literature, opera and film.
