About this book

The work is based on a long tradition of studies that deal with the relationship between new and established media. She investigates whether video streaming services such as Netflix and classic linear television compete with each other or rather complement each other. Video streaming is a very recent phenomenon and so far there are only a few empirical studies on the relationship between this new distribution format and classic television. Using an online survey, the study shows that although television is still the medium with the longest useful life, there is a trend away from linear television towards non-linear video-on-demand consumption among the so-called digital natives. Potential crowding-out effects can be observed - especially in this young target group - in addition to convergent uses. These convergence processes triggered by digital change on the Internet and in the TV market are not only seen here as a threat to traditional television, but rather as an opportunity to realign television as a medium.
