"1975 begannen die Arbeiten an den Regesta Imperii für die Zeit Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossas, im März 2018 sind sie nun, stets getragen vom selben Bearbeiter, zu Ende gegangen. Mit diesem letzten Band werden – sieben Jahre nach Vorlage der kompletten chronologischen Regestenreihe – nochmals Nachträge, das Register der Orts- und Personennamen und die Bibliographie publiziert. Das Register erschließt mit seiner ungeheuren Spannweite – von der Iberischen Halbinsel und den modernen Benelux-Staaten im Westen, im Osten im Kontext des Kreuzzuges bis in die Türkei und Teile des Nahen Ostens reichend – weit mehr, als es das ohnehin schon große Gebiet des Heiligen Römischen Reiches vermuten lässt. Die Einleitung ist – nach 43 Jahren – zugleich ein Nachwort, bietet daher Nachbetrachtungen, Reflexionen und Erläuterungen zu einem Lebenswerk."
