Alla morte di Stalin la leadership sovietica elaborò una politica estera più flessibile rispetto al passato, dando avvio a una nuova fase nella guerra fredda volta a perseguire la distensione tra i blocchi. A una politica bipolare aggressiva si sostituì gradualmente una nuova forma di competizione tra sistemi, nella quale l'Italia tentò di ritagliarsi spazi di azione "originali", che rispondevano all'ambizione di giocare un ruolo di mediazione nelle relazioni tra Est e Ovest. La presenza di un grande partito comunista, l'eccellenza del «made in Italy» e la preparazione alla formula del centro-sinistra sin dalla metà degli anni Cinquanta suscitarono le attenzioni del Cremlino e innescarono nuove dinamiche nelle relazioni bilaterali. Maturò così un fitto intreccio di rapporti fra dirigenti sovietici – Chruš?ëv, Gromyko, Brežnev, Kosygin, Suslov – e i protagonisti politici italiani del tempo: Gronchi, Fanfani, Moro, Togliatti, Berlinguer. La nuova stagione corrispose anche all'espansione di grandi gruppi imprenditoriali italiani in Urss, fra tutti Eni e Fiat, che, guidati da Mattei e Valletta, svolsero la funzione di importante trait d'union tra politica ed economia.La raccolta di documenti inediti provenienti dall'Archivio del Comitato Centrale del Pcus permette di ricostruire il punto di vista sovietico su quegli anni e analizzare da una nuova prospettiva diversi snodi della storia italiana del dopoguerra.
