Greetings from Las Vegas

About this book

This book of vintage Vegas ephemera offers a guided tour of Sin City's rise out of the Mojave Desert to become a major entertainment destination .

Greetings from Las Vegas tells the story of Las Vegas during its golden age in the first half of the twentieth-century. The city's miraculous evolution comes alive through a fun and diverse collection of vintage photos, picture postcards, matchbooks, ads, and other ephemera. This beautifully illustrated volume captures the glamor of Fremont Street and the Las Vegas Strip, landmarks such as the Sands and Riviera hotel casinos, and the cream of Hollywood glitterati, including Frank, Sammy, Dino, and the rest of the Rat Pack.

Author Peter Moruzzi's sharp and irreverent commentary provides essential context for the visual treats as well as a unique historical take on the evolution of this desert playground.

Thunderbird

The next property to be built on the Strip, the Thunderbird of 1948, was a hybrid of the El Rancho’s and Last Frontier’s Old West theme and the Flamingo’s Hollywood sophistication. Its most distinctive element was an enormous multicolored neon Thunderbird perched atop the hotel’s central tower.

Desert Inn

Around the time that Billy Wilkerson was planning his Flamingo project, San Diegan Wilbur Clark arranged financing for his dream project, the Desert Inn. Based upon an initial design by architect Wayne McAllister, foundations had been poured when Clark—like Wilkerson—ran out of money.
To his rescue came Morris “Moe” Dalitz and his underworld associates from Ohio. Unlike Wilkerson, Clark was fully aware of who he was dealing with, ceding majority control to Dalitz while keeping his name on the marquee. Wilbur Clark’s Desert Inn opened in 1950 with a design by local architect Hugh Taylor. Not quite as stylistically modern as the Flamingo, the Desert Inn nonetheless was a refined synthesis of the Western Ranch style and contemporary flair. Topping the main building near its beautiful curvilinear neon sign was the Sky Room, a glass-enclosed lounge with spectacular views of the surrounding desert and mountains.
