Este libro es el resultado de una compilación de trabajos y conferencias que sobre distintos aspectos de la sociedad colombiana escribiera y pronunciara Estanislao Zuleta durante los últimos tres años de su vida (1987 -1990) cuando estuvo trabajando para las Naciones Unidas en la Consejería de Derechos Humanos de la Presidencia de la República. También hacen parte del libro algunas conferencias y documentos anteriores que fueron incluidos, pues en ellos se plantean enfoques sobre los derechos humanos y la violencia que aportan notablemente al contenido general del libro.
En esta edición se incluye, además, un importante documento: la conferencia dictada a los guerrilleros del M-19 en proceso de desmovilización, en el campamento de paz de Santo Domingo, Cauca, en mayo de 1989.
Se trata del rescate de una obra publicada inicialmente publicada en 1992, hoy inencontrable y absolutamente pertinente para el momento actual que vive el país.
