Chronology of Productions
‘Alternative’ theatre in Britain in the sixties and seventies was so fertile and productive, and with the growth of small scale touring so geographically far-flung (performing so often to non-theatre audiences in non-theatre spaces), that the need for a precise record of work done, wherever it occurred became increasingly apparent as research for this book progressed. This was also a period when London fringe venues were a vital part of the theatre scene - in atmosphere and ambience and also in mounting dozens and hundreds of new plays. The most suitable ‘history’ of those venues seemed to be a record of their productions. All this, together with the fact that playwrights worked in so many different areas of theatre during this period, suggested the need for an extensive chronology of productions.
So the chronology which follows includes the major productions of playwrights, theatre companies and theatres discussed in this book, listing author’s name, title of the play, when and where it was first performed. The bulk of the chronology therefore falls between the years 1968 and 1978, and for these years the entries are as comprehensive as it was possible to make them within the terms of reference of the book - with the full (and greatly appreciated) co-operation of all those writers, theatres and companies involved.
