Chapter 19
The Teachings of Jesus
Jesus performed all the miracles stated above, along with additional others that were not listed here, to prove without a doubt that he was God. Another thing that Jesus did during his three-year ministry was, he taught the people about himself as God the Savior, about God the Father, about heaven, and about how we are to live our lives, among other things. These are some, but not all his teachings. To learn about all of Jesus’s teachings, please read the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the Bible.
Jesus Says that the Way to Love Him
Is to Read and Know the Bible (The Commands from God to Us) and Do What It Says in Your Life
Jesus said,
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he is it who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. (John 14:21)
Jesus said,
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit if truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him or knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:15–17)
Jesus said,
If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (John 14:23)
Whatever we ask we receive from God, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God abides in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. (1 John 3:22–24)
Jesus said,
You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what the master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:14–15)
Whoever Does the Will of God Will Be a Family Member of Jesus
While Jesus was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand to his disciples, he said “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (italics added) (Matthew 12:46–50)
In Jesus’s own words, he makes it clear that to love Jesus, to be his friend, to have God abide in us, and to be part of Jesus’s family, we must follow his commandments and the will of God the Father. How do we know what Jesus commands us to do and what the will of God the Father is for us? He tells us in his Word to us, the Bible. We must read the Bible, know it, and follow it in our lives. If we do, Jesus said that is how we love him, he will become our friend, he will abide in us, and we will become a member of his immediate family.
The Beatitudes
Jesus went up on a mountain and taught the following to the crowd, which is called the beatitudes. The beatitudes describe some of the qualities of followers of Jesus:
Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when others criticize you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, because they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5:3–12)
We Are to Be the Salt and Light of the World
Jesus said that Christians are to be good, consistent examples of followers of Christ to the rest of the world:
Jesus said,
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness to be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, son that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:13–16)
Jesus Came to Fulfill the Law
Jesus said,
Do not think I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. (Matthew 5:17–20)
Do Not Have Anger in Your Hearts but Make Peace with Each Other
[Summary] Jesus said that although the Law says if you murder you will be liable to judgement, Jesus says that having anger in your heart toward anyone is wrong and a sin. If you have anything against anyone in your heart, or you know of another person that has something against you, stop what you are doing, go to that person, and attempt to make peace with him or her. (Matthew 5:21–26)
Avoid Lust
[Summary] Jesus said that adultery is a sin. However, if you have lustful intents in your heart, that is also sinning. Do whatever you can do to avoid lustful thoughts to entice you. Do whatever you have to do to avoid the temptations that cause these lustful thoughts. (Matthew 5:27–30)
Divorce
Jesus said,
I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matthew 5:32)
Do Not Take Oaths
[Summary] Jesus said to not take oaths in any form. Instead, say yes when you mean yes and no when you mean no and do not lie. (Matthew 5:33–36)
Seek Mercy, Not Revenge
[Summary] Jesus said you must not try to get revenge against others that you believe have done wrong to you. Additionally, you should be very generous in your giving help to others who ask for it or are in need of it. (Matthew 5:38–42)
Love Your Enemies
Jesus said,
You have heard that it was said “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you, so that you may be the sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love those that love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:43–48)
Be Generous to Others, but Do Not Do It to Show Off
Jesus said,
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them (italics added), for then you will have no reward from your father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward [the praise they got from others]. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:1–4)
Jesus Gives Us the Lord’s Prayer
Jesus said that when you pray, do not do it in a way to show off to be noticed by others. Pray in a personal way between you and God your Father. Also, when you pray, do not use a bunch of long, empty phrases. God is not impressed by how many words you use when you pray. Jesus said,
Pray then like this:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our debts, a
