La spoliazione sta avvenendo per mano di un aristocratico scozzese, Thomas Bruce, settimo conte di Elgin, che sta impegnando gran parte delle sue energie a traslocare in patria i tanti tesori, o a salvarli, come lui è fermamente convinto, dall'incuria, dai furti e dalla distruzione.
