Self-motivation for better time management: autosuggestion, affirmation, strength-weakness analysis

Motivation from the outside is important, but unfortunately you can not always expect others to build you. You have to do that yourself. You can find out how it works here.
Self-motivation
You should first observe some basic rules - if you follow these in your daily work, you have already motivated yourself well.
- Work on your own responsibility - you decide when and what you work for and know what the work is good for
- Create good working conditions (for example through optimal scheduling and office organization).
- Get a positive attitude. Enjoy yourself minimal progress. This will ensure that your interest in your work is maintained.
- Tap regularly on the shoulder, emphasize your successes
- Take praise from others
- Work balanced: Not too much routine and boredom, but also not too much variety that it creates stress.
Working life is not always exciting, exciting and new. In order for you to work well, you also need to do routine work. Particularly impatient people find that difficult. But you can practice that by approaching smaller and less important tasks with pleasure - after all, they too contribute to success. And: Being creative at all costs would be very exhausting in the long run!
Know your strengths and weaknesses
Unfortunately, with these rules is not always done. Especially when you receive criticism, you probably need an increased self-motivation. That's not surprising, because as children, many people have learned to trust others more than they do to themselves. When they receive criticism, they often believe it simply instead of focusing on their own strengths. Or they fall into a defiant "I can-but-but-attitude" that prevents them from recognizing the potential for improvement in the criticism.
To prevent this, it is important that you clearly and factually bring your own strengths and weaknesses before the eyes, promote the former and reduce the latter. Unfortunately, this is not always as easy as it sounds, because many people even deal with stress situations in themselves with statements that increase anxiety and obstruct performance, rather than just calmly and factually consider that everything is not so bad. For if you replace your negative self-statements with self-assertive statements, you reduce your personal stress by reversing self-verbalization.
Avoid killer phrases
A typical killer phrase is, "I can not do that, today is not my day and I'm just too stupid!" It would be better to calmly say to oneself in a stressful situation: "Well, it did not go well, but it works much better than before! "
Of course, everyone knows that generalized statements such as "I'm just too stupid!" Can not be meant seriously, and you're probably only saying it about yourself in the first hassle. However, the effect of such a statement is fatal, because most people unconsciously accept messages that they hear over and over again as true statements, without ever being checked for their truth.
Positive and negative amplifiers
Example: Mrs. M. lost her main customer. A rational consideration would be to rely on the strengths of your company and thus win new customers. Instead, Ms. M thinks, "The customer is gone because my business is bad. I will not find any new customers. I can shut up and look for a job. "If you put that plan into action, she'll always agree with that statement instead of checking that it's different.
But you certainly also know those situations in which you also cheer yourself on, if you want to achieve something, for example, say yourself: "Come on, you can do it." Whether positive or negative, both behaviors are two downsides and the same medal, both are a form of auto-suggestion. Psychology understands auto-suggestion as the self-influencing of feeling, thinking and acting. A person trains their subconscious mind to believe in something.
Autosuggestion as brainwashing?
This sounds a bit like self-induced brainwashing and, in fact, the term suggestion is ethymologically derived from the Latin "subgerere" or "suggerer", which means pushing. Certainly, this technique is not universally applicable. However, as you have already seen from the examples presented, many people already use this technique unconsciously. What could be more logical than systematically applying this method to motivate oneself?
Autosuggestion is not a panacea. It helps you with individual problems or uncertainties, not to unnecessarily demotivate yourself. When something really goes awry, such as when customers complain constantly or stay away permanently, you should think constructively about what you can do differently - such as a strengths and weaknesses analysis (see below).
Instructions for autosuggestion
Think carefully about situations in your daily working life in which you need special motivation, for example, if you want to acquire new customers. Then think about what exactly makes motivation necessary in this situation and with which reinforcing sentences (affirmations) they could build up.
For example, you want to convince potential customers at a trade fair. You have a good concept and attractive promotional material. Since you are new to the market, you are absolutely dependent on the customers. Nevertheless, want to be as confident as possible in order to have a good negotiating basis. At the same time, you are afraid of being told that you are inexperienced and that potential customers may not be interested in your offer.
Finding the right affirmations
First, find a basic formula for affirmation that describes your goal positively and in the present, as if you had already reached the goal. In the example, the basic formula could be: "For my clients, my performance and my offer are very interesting, so I confidently and confidently face my clients." Avoid using restrictive conjunctions such as "When I perform sovereign and confident ..." or "While I'm new to the market, but ..." and the use of the subjunctive "I should / could / would".
Never better describe what you do not want but always what you want instead, because the subconscious does not understand negations. If you say to yourself, "I have a good offer, so it is not critical for my clients that I have little experience," then your subconscious mind understands, "it's critical for my clients that I have little experience." So you better say, "I have a good offer that my clients appreciate." Thus, the message to your subconscious mind is clearly focused on your goal: you want to convince the customers of your offer.
Find motivational sentences
It's all about finding phrases that motivate you. You should feel positive emotions, a tingling sensation, when you read your affirmations or tell yourself - as if you are looking forward to achieving your goals. To add to the emotional impact, you can also add your own name: "I, Frauke Peters, is an excellent performer for my clients." Add extra value to your sentences with elements that make your emotions even stronger. It may look like this: "I feel wonderful because my clients find my offer interesting and accepting", or "I am confident that I am impressing my clients and you with my performance." Searching specifically for phrases and words, trigger the positive feelings in you and incorporate them into your affirmations.
Formulations that increase motivation vary by type. Some people need very strong affirmations like "super / great / wonderful", others may find these words overly exaggerated and they prefer a simple "good" or "beautiful". Find your own formulations.
Strengths and weaknesses analysis
Autosuggestion is a good way to avoid unnecessary demotivation. It helps you to process the first frustration in case of problems and to think positive again. But of course you have, like all people in addition to benefits that you recall by autosuggestion, also weaknesses. Maybe you would like to replace them. However, that is the wrong way, because even the weaknesses are ultimately yours. Deciding for the success of your company is whether you can use your strengths optimally in crunch situations and deal with your weaknesses properly.
Example: Ms. M. lost a main customer. Ms. M's strengths lie in the communicative field. She could trust that with her many contacts she will soon gain new customers. Unfortunately, Mrs. M. is also impatient and tends to be nervous when something does not go right away. These properties prevent them from believing in their strengths and let them fear a failure of their company.
Any weakness can also be a strength
So you see how important it is to make your own strengths and weaknesses clear. Keep them in mind in difficult situations. So you know what features help you solve your problem, but also what you should look out for. For example, if Ms. M becomes aware that she is prone to impatience and nervousness even in difficult situations, she can take appropriate countermeasures such as relaxation exercises and distractions to keep a clear head. A realistic self-image helps in this way to a healthy self-esteem.
Any weakness can also be a strength (of course, vice versa!). So you do not have to eradicate your weaknesses mercilessly, it's enough if you reduce them more or less to improve the effects. Often, features that you previously viewed as a weakness may be useful to you.
Divide your competences into 5 areas
To do that, you should make a constructive and comprehensive analysis of your own strengths and weaknesses that you can recall at any time. First divide your skills into five areas:
- First, specialist skills. This includes your technical knowledge in your profession, which you have acquired, for example, through your education or work experience. It also says whether you are an IT specialist or a gifted chef. The specialist skills are your specialty, which is what makes up the core of your company.
- In addition, your very personal individual competences come into play. These include, for example, endurance and stability, flexibility, determination, creativity, ability to reflect and learn, frustration tolerance or self-confidence.
- Another aspect is your social skills such as empathy, the ability to relate and communicate, ability to co-operate and assertiveness, leadership and responsibility, and intercultural skills.
- After all, even as an entrepreneur, your conceptual skills are important: your ability to analyze and organize, to think visionarily but also to correctly assess the current situation.
Table overview of your strengths and weaknesses
Create one table each for your strengths and one for each of your weaknesses. Also stand by your weaknesses. No one expects you to be perfect. If you at least admit your small weaknesses to yourself, you will get a much more objective picture of yourself and then know which projects you can take on according to your strengths and which ones you do not like.
