01 What is a computer?

What is a computer?
The computer is a machine for working information digitally (using 0s and 1s). Smartphones and robots are also types of computers.
What are the basic parts of a computer?
The computer’s main body performs calculations. The monitor displays information on the screen. The keyboard and mouse can be used to input information into a computer.
What is a laptop?
A laptop is a portable computer with a
smaller monitor and a built-in keyboard
and mouse.

A laptop usually has a touchpad, which
includes a built-in mouse. Using a separate
mouse may be easier. Make sure to charge
your battery before using the laptop.

02 How to use the mouse

Holding the mouse
Whether you are left-handed or right-handed, use the more comfortable hand to hold the mouse. Grip the mouse lightly with your dominant hand. Then, place your thumb on
the left part of the mouse, and your index finger on the upper-left part.

What is a mouse pointer?
When you hold and move the mouse, you can see a small arrow-shaped mouse pointer moving on the computer screen.
Single-click
Click the left mouse button once with your index finger and quickly release it. Single-click is typically used to select an icon.
Double-click
With double-click, you can open files and folders in Windows.
Right-click
Click the right mouse button with your middle finger to see a drop-down menu.
Wheel-scrolling
Click anywhere on the page and scroll up or down the wheel with your index finger or middle finger. You can see the page rolling up or down.

03 How to use the keyboard

A computer keyboard is an input device. Using the keyboard, you can type and enter words into a computer.

When you see a blinking vertical line or a “mouse cursor” on the screen, start typing. Then, press the [Enter] key from the keyboard to submit the information.

To move the cursor one space forward or to enter a space between words, hit the [Spacebar].
At first, finding the right key will be a challenge. But you’ll know your way around it in no time.

04 How to use the Internet

You can use your computer for typing or uploading videos to YouTube.
You can also visit websites using a web browser.

A web browser is a software that allows you to access the Internet.
We recommend Google Chrome as your web browser for learning Scratch. (You cannot open the Scratch site with Microsoft Explorer.)

You will find
icon at the Windows taskbar in the bottom of the screen. Click it once to open Chrome browser. (More time may be required to open a browser on a slow computer. Wait before re-clicking icon.)

If you cannot find the Chrome icon, click the search button, type “chrome” and press [Enter].

When you start Chrome, a window - like the one shown below -opens up.
Access the Internet
Go to a specific site by typing a web address.
You can access Google, YouTube, Facebook, etc.

05 How to use Chrome

Google Chrome is a web browser.
The top part of the browser with a header is called a tab. The screen changes when clicking a different tab. To go back, just click the original tab.
To see the bottom part of your screen, click and hold the long gray bar on the right and scroll down the mouse.

How to adjust
the screen size

To zoom in on your browser, hold [ctrl] and press [+] on your keyboard. Similarly, hold [ctrl] and press [-] to zoom out.

Or you can just click the ︙icon on the top right.

How to move
the scrollbar

Scrollbar is a vertical or horizontal bar on the far right or bottom of a window. This indicates there is more to see on a web page.

To see more of the page, drag the scrollbar up and down or left and right.
