Allerdings zeigen sich inzwischen sowohl in den bewĂ€hrten als auch in den jungen Demokratien ethische und kulturelle GefĂ€hrdungen sowie politische und rechtliche Strukturprobleme. Sorgen bereitet in vielen LĂ€ndern die Zersplitterung der Parteien, was zwar der ReprĂ€sentativitĂ€t des WĂ€hlerwillens entgegenkommt, aber hĂ€ufig Kompromisslösungen erzwingt. Auffallend ist zudem, dass bei vielen BĂŒrgern das Vertrauen in die Politiker geschwunden und die Kluft zwischen WĂ€hlern und GewĂ€hlten grĂ¶ĂŸer geworden ist. Wenn die WĂ€hler aber den Eindruck haben, dass die wichtigen Fragen ohne sie oder ĂŒber ihre Köpfe hinweg entschieden werden, nehmen Politikverdrossenheit und WahlmĂŒdigkeit zu. Die Demokratie wird auch dann als prekĂ€r empfunden, wenn es nicht gelingt, die wirtschaftlichen oder sozialen VerhĂ€ltnisse so zu gestalten, dass die soziale Gerechtigkeit nicht auf der Strecke bleibt.Die BeitrĂ€ge gehen auf das 9. Deutsch-Amerikanische Kolloquium zurĂŒck, das auf Initiative der School of Philosophy der Catholic University, Washington DC, und der Katholischen Sozialwissenschaftlichen Zentralstelle, Mönchengladbach, vom 9. bis 14. Juli 2006 in Wildbad Kreuth durchgefĂŒhrt wurde.
