Die aktuellen Rekonstruktionen der Baugeschichten der frühen Kirchen auf der Iberischen Halbinsel basieren größtenteils auf Schriftquellen und dem heutigen Geschichtsbild. Mit der These, dass alle frühen Schriftquellen Fälschungen späterer Zeit sind, und der Feststellung, dass die Geschichte des Mittelalters weitgehend konstruiert ist, bedarf es einer völligen Neubetrachtung des frühen Kirchenbaus. Der Autor bietet alternative Rekonstruktionen der angeblich westgotischen, asturischen, mozarabischen und z. T. auch romanischen Kirchenbauten Spaniens und Portugals an. Er bietet darüber hinaus eine alternative Bewertung der Reconquista, der sog. Repoblación (Wiederbesiedlung) und der Verehrung des Jakobsgrabes.
