Ihre Pflichten als Hausfrau und Mutter hinderten sie nicht daran, sich in privater Wohltätigkeit für soziale Fragen einzusetzen. Marie Heim-Vögtlin nimmt in der Frauen- und Geschlechtergeschichte der Schweiz einen prominenten Platz ein. Sie ist eine jener Frauen, die sich in der bürgerlichen Schweiz des 19. Jahrhunderts ihren eigenen Weg der beruflichen Selbstverwirklichung gebahnt haben. Als praktizierende Gynäkologin und Mutter zweier Kinder vollbrachte sie eine weibliche Pioniertat, die für ihre Zeit unerhört war. Lange galt die erste Schweizer Ärztin als wegweisendes Vorbild. Die 1968er-Generation jedoch stiess sich daran, dass sie als verheiratete Frau den Schutz eines prominenten Gatten genoss und private Wohl-tätigkeit betrieb, statt eine gerechtere Gesellschaftsordnung zu fordern. Die Autorin geht diesen Vor-würfen nach und entwirft ein neues Bild der kämpferischen Frau. Die Biografie beruht auf wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen, richtet sich aber an ein breites Publikum. Sie erscheint im Vorfeld der Feiern zum 175-Jahr-Jubiläum der Universität Zürich.
