Der Erste Weltkrieg zog alle Weltmächte in seinen Bann. An der Gefechtsfront und an den Heimfronten unternahmen die Kriegsmächte unvergleichliche Anstrengungen. Mit vielfach erhöhter Produktion und umfassender Mobilisation versuchten sie, den Erfolg an der Gefechtsfront zu erzwingen. Dies führte zu einem Wandel der Streitkräfte und der Kampfführung, aber auch zu einer Totalisierung der Kriegsführung unter Einbezug ganzer nationaler Gesellschaften und ihrer Kultur. Nach dem Krieg zogen die politischen und militärischen Eliten 'Kriegslehren' von ganz unterschiedlicher Tiefe. Ebenso intensiv und umstritten waren die gesellschaftliche Verarbeitung und das Gedenken an diesen Krieg. Der Band vereint 19 Beiträge, verfasst von international renommierten Historikerinnen und Historikern.
