Die Inspiration für diese neue linguistische Teildisziplin stammt aus der Missionarslinguistik und der rezenten Diskussion über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Sprache, Linguistik und Kolonialismus. Die Zusammenführung dieser beiden Perspektiven zeichnet die "Koloniale und Postkoloniale Linguistik" besonders aus.

KPL/CPL macht in erster Linie solche Texte der interessierten Öffentlichkeit (Linguisten, Historiker, Muttersprachler der Objektsprachen usw.) in kommentierter Form zugänglich, die über die Sprachen der ehemaligen europäischen Überseebesitzungen handeln und während der Kolonialepoche abgefasst wurden. Spezielles Augenmerk wird auf bisher unveröffentlichte oder heute nur schwer zugängliche Texte gelegt. In KPL/CPL werden außerdem Studien veröffentlicht, die der Frage nachgehen, inwiefern die kolonialzeitlichen linguistischen Texte den politischen und kulturellen Diskurs des Kolonialismus reflektieren. In der Reihe erscheinen sowohl Monographien als auch Sammelbände. Alle Manuskripte unterliegen einem Begutachtungsverfahren (double blind). Die bevorzugten Publikationssprachen sind Englisch und Deutsch.
