About This Book

Meng Haoran (689-740) was one of the most important poets of the "High Tang" period, the greatest age of Chinese poetry. In his own time he was famous for his poetry as well as for his distinctive personality. This is the first complete translation into any language of all his extant poetry. Includes original Chinese texts and English translation on facing pages.

朝遊訪名山
At morning out I rambled in search of a mountain of renown,
山遠在空翠
A mountain distant, resting in the halcyon-blue of the void.
氛氳亘百里
Its full and favoring vapors extended a hundred leagues;
4日入行始至
At last as the sun went in, my journey brought me there.
谷口聞鐘聲
At the valley’s mouth I heard the voice of a bell; 2
林端識香氣
On the verge of a grove, sensed fumes of incense.
杖策尋故人
Wielding a horse’s reins, I came to find an old friend3
8解鞍暫停騎
Now loosing the saddle, I stop awhile from riding.
石門殊壑險
A stone gate stands sheer in the steepness of the gorge;
篁徑轉森邃
A footpath by a bamboo-brake turns in the forest’s depths.
法侶欣相逢
The dharma companion takes delight in our meeting;
12清談曉不寐
His rarefied talk holds me sleepless till next daybreak.
平生慕真隱
All life long I have admired true reclusion,
累日探靈異
Through the hoard of days searched for holy wonders.
野老朝入田
Here an old man of the moors goes into the fields at morning,
16山僧暮歸寺
And a mountainside monk comes home at evening to his temple.
松泉多清響
A spring near pine-trees multiplies echoes of purity,
苔壁饒古意
And a moss-covered wall adds to thoughts of older times.
