aphelion
The point on an orbit that is farthest from the Sun.
apogee
The point on its orbit at which the Moon is farthest from the Earth.
appulse
The apparently close approach of two celestial objects; two planets, or a planet and star.
astronomical unit
(AU) The mean distance of the Earth from the Sun, 149,597,870 km.
celestial equator
The great circle on the celestial sphere that is in the same plane as the Earth’s equator.
celestial sphere
The apparent sphere surrounding the Earth on which all celestial bodies (stars, planets, etc.) seem to be located.
conjunction
The point in time when two celestial objects have the same celestial longitude. In the case of the Sun and a planet, superior conjunction occurs when the planet lies on the far side of the Sun (as seen from Earth). For Mercury and Venus, inferior conjunction occurs when they pass between the Sun and the Earth.
direct motion
Motion from west to east on the sky.
ecliptic
The apparent path of the Sun across the sky throughout the year. Also: the plane of the Earth’s orbit in space.
elongation
The point at which an inferior planet has the greatest angular distance from the Sun, as se...
