Math Curriculum for Gifted Students

Lessons, Activities, and Extensions for Gifted and Advanced Learners: Grade 4

About this book

The Math Curriculum for Gifted Students series:

  • Provides gifted and advanced learners with challenging activities to extend their mathematical thinking.
  • Includes lessons, activities, and extensions that are aligned to national standards.
  • Is designed to provide high-ability learners advancement beyond the general curriculum.
  • Is ideal for gifted classrooms or gifted pull-out groups.
  • Was developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary.

In Math Curriculum for Gifted Students (Grade 4), the 24 lessons cover mathematics content for grade 4 and are divided into five sections: number and operations in Base Ten, operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations-fractions, measurement and data, and geometry. Each lesson includes a teacher page that outlines the estimated time, key terms, materials, and objectives; a challenging activity to allow students to explore the concepts in depth; practice problems; and an assessment similar to standards-based grade-level standardized assessments.

  • Identity property of multiplication

Materials

  • Lesson 3.1 Activity: Create the Equivalent
  • Lesson 3.1 Fraction Cards (copy these on cardstock and cut before lesson)
  • Lesson 3.1 Practice: Evaluating Equivalent Fractions
  • Lesson 3.1 Assessment Practice
  • Blank cardstock (cut before lessons)

Objectives

In this lesson, students will:
  • create equivalent fractions based on a model,
  • evaluate fractions to find equivalent fractions, and
  • utilize the identity property of multiplication to generalize a rule for creating equivalent fractions.

Lesson 3.1 Activity: Create the Equivalent

In this activity, students will take turns pulling a card from the pile. Using the fraction represented on this card, students should create two additional cards representing an equivalent fraction. By the end, students should have a card with a numerical fraction, an area model, and number line, so students need to draw whichever two are missing. All fractions represented on the cards should be different, yet equivalent, fractions (e.g., 14 and 312). To make the activity more challenging, students could also be given cards with mixed numbers and improper fractions.

LESSON 3.1 ACTIVITY Create the Equivalent

Directions: Take turns with a partner pulling a fraction card from the pile. Using the fraction represented on the card, create two additional cards representing equivalent fractions. You should have a set of cards with a numerical fraction, an area model, and a number line model, so draw whichever is missing. Be sure to keep all fractions equivalent, but not identical (e.g., if the fraction card says 12, the cards you draw should show fractions that are equivalent to 12, yet not 12, such as 24).

Extend Your Thinking

  1. Use the cards you and your partner have created to play a game of Memory.
