Habana Vieja

Havana's Old Town is one of the historical highlights of Latin America, an architectural masterpiece where fastidiously preserved squares and grandiose palaces sit alongside a living, breathing urban community still emerging from the economic chaos of the 1990s. The overall result is by turns grand and gritty, inspiring and frustrating, commendable and lamentable. No one should leave Cuba without seeing it.

The Sights in a Day

MTo tackle history-filled Habana Vieja properly, sit down for breakfast with a map in La Vitrola on the corner of Plaza Vieja, and draw up a strategic plan of attack. The overriding motto: you won't have time to see everything. You can spend a good hour enjoying Plaza Vieja itself before moving onto Plaza de Armas with its book market and essential Museo de la Ciudad, which will tell you all you need to know about Havana's swashbuckling roots.
RTop up your sugar levels in the Museo del Chocolate before strolling down the colonial time capsule of Calle Mercaderes. Continue on to the Catedral de la Habana before hailing a cab to take you under the harbor to the Parque Histórico Militar Morro-Cabaña. Stay until sunset peacefully perusing the gory details of conflicts past.
NReturn to the old quarter and go for a long, slow dinner in El Rum Rum de la Habana before hitting the bars and live music scene in Plaza del Cristo.
