Sol, Santa Ana & Huertas
These tightly packed streets are best known for nightlife that doesnāt seem to abate once the sun goes down, but thereās also the beguiling Plaza de Santa Ana, a stirring literary heritage in the Barrio de las Letras and, at the Sol end of things, Madridās beating heart, youāll find the sum total of all Madridās personalities, with fabulous shopping, eating and entertainment options.
Sol, Santa Ana and Huertas together make up Madridās most clamorous corner. Many explorations of this neighbourhood begin in the Plaza de la Puerta del Sol, the pulsing heart of downtown Madrid, then move on to nearby Plaza de Santa Ana and the laneways that tumble down the hillside to the east.
Sol is above all a crossroads, a place for people to meet before fanning out across the city. There are reasons to linger, but for the most part a sense of transience is what prevails. Plaza de Santa Ana, on the other hand, is a destination in its own right, a beautiful square that has become emblematic of a city intent on living the good life. It is also a place of many moods. On a sunny weekday afternoon, it can be quiet, but come most nights of the week, Santa Ana and the surrounding streets crescendo into life.

Walking TourA Night Out in Huertas
As sunset nears, locals begin arriving in the Plaza de Santa Ana and the streets towards Sol and down towards the Paseo del Prado. Thatās because bars here range from cool and classy rooftop perches to ancient barrio (district) classics that havenāt changed in decades. And thrown in for...
