Downtown Jerusalem

A few blocks west of the Old City, Jerusalem’s downtown hums with bars, brunch spots and boutiques. Threaded with car-free streets, it attracts locals and tourists who dawdle their way from shops to sun-bleached plazas. Stone-flanked alleys, featuring jewellers, art studios, courtyard cafes and souvenir shops, are tucked away where traffic can’t reach, branching off from pedestrian drag Ben Yehuda.

What downtown Jerusalem lacks in major sights is made up for with a wealth of dining and drinking experiences. Come hungry and spend your time dabbling in the international cuisine and spirits scene at Mahane Yehuda Market. One of its best restaurants is, appropriately enough, called Machneyuda. Afterwards, make a night of sampling brews at Beer Bazaar, or just wander the market’s aisles and see what you get into – this is one of the city’s hottest nightlife spots, with a lively bar scene that spills over into the streets.

Getting There & Around
Jerusalem’s light-rail line cuts through the heart of downtown on Yaffa St with stops at City Hall, King George and Mahane Yehuda, among others.
g Many bus lines criss-cross the area.

Top SightMahane Yehuda Market

Let your tastebuds travel the world along a few of Jerusalem’s narrow streets that make up Mahane Yehuda Market. Be tempted by Georgian baked goods, Iraqi stuffed vine leaves, Argentinian empanadas, homemade Italian limoncello, Colombian sandwiches, Yemenite remedy drinks, Japanese sushi and, of course, falafel. The menu at this market of 350 shops, the city’s best, would thrill the most demanding appetite.
