Centro Storico

Naples’ World Heritage–listed historic core offers a dizzying rush of bellowing baristas, cultish shrines and operatic palazzi (mansions). The neighbourhood’s spectacular cache spans everything from citrus-scented cloisters to frescoed churches, not to mention many of Naples’ top eateries, its most boho-spirited bars and its most idiosyncratic artisan studios.

Start with show-stopping artistry at the Chiesa del GesĂč Nuovo and Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara. Peer at rare Angevin garments at the nearby Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore or head straight to the Cappella Sansevero for its astounding Cristo velato sculpture. Lunch on soulful ragĂč at Tandem before continuing east to the Duomo, home to a spectacular, fresco-lavished dome. Close by, the Pio Monte della Misericordia houses an innovative Caravaggio masterpiece. Alternatively, eye up contemporary art at MADRE. Dine on local produce at Salumeria or Donna Romita, then swill and schmooze on buzzing Piazze Bellini, home to venues including gallery-bar Spazio Nea.

Getting There & Around
m Dante, Museo, UniversitĂ  and Duomo on Line 1 and Piazza Cavour on Line 2 skirts the centro storico (historic centre).
g Route R2 runs along Corso Umberto I at the southern end of the neighbourhood, connecting Napoli Centrale to Piazza Trieste e Trento.

Top SightCapella Sansevero

That the Capella Sansevero is the most visited sight in Naples is hardly surprising. The former stomping ground – and final resting place – of the city’s most infamous alchemist lays claim to the Cristo velato (Veiled Christ), an 18th-century sculpture so extraordinary that many have questioned how only a talented artist’s hand could achieve such perfection.
