Altstadt & the Residenz

The Altstadt is a must-see for all visitors to Munich – some of the city’s best sights, eateries and shops can be found within the inner ring road, at the centre of which is the Marienplatz, the city’s main square and an ideal spot to get your bearings.

The nearby Residenz, a sprawling palace from where Bavaria’s royals once ruled, should be top of your ‘to-visit’ list. Combine a trip to the palace with a stroll along Maximilianstrasse, Munich’s most exclusive shopping street. In the afternoon visit the Stadtmuseum for the lowdown on the city’s history then wander down to the Asamkirche, which offers Munich’s finest church interior. Follow this with a spot of shopping in Kaufingerstrasse or at the Stachus before dining at one of the Altstadt’s many traditional taverns, such as the inimitable Hofbräuhaus.
