Centrum
When exploring Centrum you’ll probably spend more time looking up than ahead, visually sidetracked by its profusion of visually arresting high-rise buildings. Many of these date from the 1940s and 1950s, but some are new – and extremely exciting – arrivals. Indoors, there are plenty of museums and galleries to visit.
This neighbourhood is compact and easy to navigate. Start your exploration at Centraal Station, then head south towards the waterfront, branching off the main axis, Mauritsweg, to visit the cultural institutions around Museumpark. Next, explore the streets and sites in the Cool District. Don’t miss Markthal and the fashionable streets around Meent, where you can stop for lunch. Then to Witte de Withstraat, Rotterdam’s party and arts street, where you can gallery-hop, eat, drink and dance the rest of the day away.

Top SightsHuis Sonneveld
Replete with original fittings and furniture, the Sonneveld House transports visitors back to 1930s Rotterdam, when local architects were embracing Functionalism and designing streamlined and resolutely modern buildings for their clients to work and live in. This aesthetically pared-back but technology-rich house is one of the greatest examples of this significant architectural movement.
