As in any major city, accommodation will take up a big chunk of your Tokyo budget. But there’s good news: there are plenty of attractive budget and midrange options, and levels of cleanliness and service are generally high. You can play it safe with a standard hotel or change it up with a more local option, like a ryokan (traditional inn with Japanese-style bedding) or a capsule hotel.
Apartment Hotels
Tokyo has a few hotels that offer rooms with the amenities of a small studio apartment, including kitchenettes and in-room laundry facilities. These can sometimes sleep more than two, which makes them a good option for families. Tokyu Stay (www.tokyustay.co.jp/e) is a reliable chain that has apartment-style rooms.
Boutique & Design Hotels
Tokyo has some very cool boutique and design hotels. While stylish, some are milking the design factor a little too much: be wary of ones with rooms that are really no bigger than those of a business hotel and, alternatively, ones that out-price even the luxury hotel franchises, but often don’t have the same level of practised concierges that the established-name hotels have. A double room for ¥20,000 to ¥25,000 is around the sweet spot.
Business Hotels
Functional and economical, ‘business hotels’ have compact rooms, usually with semidouble beds (140cm across; roomy for one, a bit of a squeeze for two) and tiny en-suite bathrooms. If cost performance is your chief deciding factor – and you don’t plan to spend much time in your room – then a business hotel is your best bet.
