Venice was once known for charmingly decrepit hotels where English poets quietly expired, but new design-literate B&Bs and boutique hotels are spiffing up historic palaces. In peak seasons quality hotels fill up fast. In summer, many people decamp to the Lido where prices are more reasonable and swimming is an option after hot days in the Rialto.
More Options than Ever
Venice offers plenty of luxe hotels along the Grand Canal and Riva degli Schiavone, and there’s also a growing inventory of boutique sleeps. At the same time, the internet has made it much easier for locals to rent out their homes (or extra rooms) and short-term rentals are increasingly popular.
For budget travellers, Venice offers a range of foresterie (hostels). Some bunks even have canal or garden views. During summer, university housing also opens to tourists.
Location, Location, Location
Although Venice is a small city, getting around it amid tourist crowds and on slow vaporetti (small passenger ferries) can take time, so plan where you stay carefully. Easy access to the Grand Canal or a convenient vaporetto stop is key, although San Marco has all the best sights, and sestieri (districts) such as Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and Castello have all the best restaurants and bars. For those on a budget, Giudecca, Murano and the Lido are all within 15 to 30 minutes of the Rialto and are cheaper, quieter and more authentically Venetian.
