Genoa

Italy’s largest sea port is indefatigably contradictory, full at once of grandeur, squalor, sparkling light and deep shade. A gateway to the Riviera for many travellers, Genoa is famed for its extensive old city, with its atmospheric medieval lanes, splendid palaces, and grand plazas bursting with civic life. While still under the tourism radar, Genoa is a fabulous city to explore.

Top SightMusei di Strada Nuova

Skirting the northern edge of the old city limits, pedestrianised Via Garibaldi was planned by Galeazzo Alessi in the 16th century. It quickly became the most sought-after quarter, lined with the palaces of Genoa’s wealthiest citizens. Three of these palazzi – Rosso, Bianco and Doria-Tursi – today comprise the Musei di Strada Nuova. Between them, they hold the city’s finest collection of old masters.
