Why Go?

With its baroque streetscapes, rambling imperial palaces, winding cobbled lanes, extraordinary art-filled museums, grand Kaffeehäuser (coffee houses) and cosy wood-panelled Beisln (bistro pubs) dishing up hearty portions of Wiener Schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet), Tafelspitz (prime boiled beef) and goulash – as well as a musical heritage that includes Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms and Mahler – the Austrian capital is steeped in history. Yet it’s also at the cutting edge of design, architecture, contemporary art, and new directions in drinking and dining.
Not only is this a city that holds on to its traditions, it also incorporates them in everything from high-fashion Dirndls (women’s traditional dress) through to sweets made from resurrected recipes, third-wave coffee served at inspired neo-retro cafes, and a thriving contemporary music scene. Vienna’s past is alive in its present, and, by extension, its future.

When to Go

AVienna has such a strong range of sights and activities that any time – summer or winter – is a good time to go.
AJuly, August and holidays such as Easter, Christmas and New Year are the most crowded – be sure to book accommodation well ahead if you’re travelling at these times.
AEaster markets in the two weeks or so leading up to Easter herald the arrival of spring.
AWhile crowds are down in spring and autumn, weather can be changeable.
AIn summer catch some rays on the Danube at summer beach bars.
AIn December go ice skating in front of the Rathaus (town hall) or sip Glühwein (mulled wine) at one of the capital’s atmospheric Christmas markets.
