PREFACE
Writing a book of this nature not only poses great challenge to me but also provokes an intrinsic joy within me to be able to draw an inspiration from the most successful African on earth. Alhaji Aliko Dangote success is extraordinary in the history of entrepreneurship in Africa and the world in general.
This book should be read by all who aspire to entrepreneurial business throughout the world. Yes, you may say that the initial contract granted to him during the period of Military era in Nigeria offered him the wider opportunity but how many of us could have expanded to his present-day magnitude? In fact, my deduction from all that has been written about Alhaji Dangote including his biography is that he is in the main a self-made man! His success is commendable. As a role model, he has shown us the light but finding the way is our own responsibility.
Dr. Luke U. Ubani.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1. Introduction.
This book is about the modern entrepreneurial education and learning in the world in general and African in particular. During the independence struggle in what was then called Rhodesia, (modern Zimbabwe) the then Premaster Mr. Ian Smith declared UDI-Unilateral Declaration Independent and said: (I quote, ‘’one man-one-vote in this country’’ will never happen in my lifetime). But few years after that, his wish came to no avail. Another example was when Nelson Mandela under the umbrella of ANC, dedicated himself to bringing about a historical change in the government of South Africa in 1989. You see, wonders shall never end! In the beginning of the enslavement of Africa and the Africans, the question was can anything good come from Africa? Today, we are witnessing that the answer to this negative pessimistic question is a capital Yes! There are many examples to typify this.
On the point of our learning at various business schools of the world our attentions were always directed towards the Western Management Experts. But in modern time, a wind of change is blowing towards Africa among the Africans. The following is a typical example of this change:
Alhaji Aliko Dangote (Born 10 April 1957, in Kano, Nigeria) is a Nigerian self-made business magnate, with an estimated net worth of $20.1 billion USD as of March 2013. Based in Nigeria, he is the owner of the Dangote Group, which has interests in commodities with operations in his homeland and several other countries in Africa, including Benin, Cameroon, Togo, Ghana, South Africa, and Zambia.
Our aim for presenting this Nigerian international entrepreneur is for us to draw motivational influence from his wonderful background and adventure. This finds expression following order:
Aliko Dangote is the Nigerian founder and president of Dangote Group. He is known to be one of the richest men in Africa, but he said, "I think I have to be rated by Forbes magazine first before I can be [called] the richest man in Africa," says Mr Dangote modestly. "But, you know, I'm comfortable. “He ranked first in Nigeria in the Forbes 2008 list of the richest people in the world with a fortune estimated at $3.3 billion dollars. This unassuming modest black African Nigerian possesses a very amiable relaxed personality. With an estimated current net worth of around US$ 13.8 billion, he was ranked by Forbes as the richest Nigerian citizen. He is also simultaneously the richest person of African descent in the world, surpassing Mohammed Al Anoud ($12.3 billion) and Oprah Winfrey ($2.7 billion.)
Aliko Dangote is the 'golden child' of Nigerian business circles. The Dangote consortium spans across many sectors of the Nigerian economy. The Dangote Group provides cements, sugar, salt, flour Rice, spaghettis, textile etc. at competitive prices. As a nonpartisan and detribalized businessperson, he is generous to different political parties, religious groups, and cultural institutions. Apart from providing employment to elite graduates from different ethnic backgrounds, he minimizes the level of crime by engaging youths who are school leavers around transportation, packaging, Security amongst others.
It may not be a wild assumption to say that every Nigerian has heard of his name because of the impact of his business. His products are in most homes across the country. Those who may not use his products would have passed some of his trailers by the way. He is into export, import, manufacturing, real estate, and philanthropy. All these are rolled together into what is known as the Dangote Group. At the helm of its affairs as president and Chief Executive Officer is an unassuming man named Aliko Dangote. The focus of his investments is food, clothing, and shelter.
The Dangote Group imports 400,000 metric tonnes of sugar annually which accounts for about 70 per cent of the total requirements of the country and is a major supplier of the product to the manufacturers of Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola and Seven-Up in Nigeria. It imports 200,000 metric tonnes of rice annually just as the company imports tonnes of cement and fertilizer and building materials. Dangote Group also imports fish and owns three big fishing trawlers chartered for fishing with a 5,000 MT capacity. The group exports cotton, cocoa, cashew nuts, sesame seed, ginger, and gum Arabic to several countries.
1.2. His Humble beginning.
Born in Kano, his grandfather the late Alhaji Sanusi Dantata provided him with a small capital to start his own business, as was the practice then. He thus started business in Kano in 1977 trading in commodities and building materials. Alhaji Aliko Dangote moved to Lagos in June 1977 and continued trading in cement and commodities. Encouraged by tremendous success and increase in business activities, he incorporated two companies in 1981. These and others that followed now make up the conglomerate known as Dangote Group.
1.3. Touching life Activities.
The group today is involved in diverse forms of manufacturing with high turnover. Dangote textile and the Nigeria Textiles Mills Plc., which it acquired, produce over 120,000 meters of finished textiles daily. The group has a ginnery in Konawa, Katsina State with a capacity of 30,000 MT of seeded cotton annually. The sugar refinery at Apala port, Lagos is the largest in Africa and in size the third largest in the world with an annual capacity of 700,000 tonnes of refined sugar annually. It also has another 100,000 tonne-capacity sugar mills at Hamdija in Jigawa State.
Apart from having substantial investment in the National Salt Company of Nigeria at Ota, Ogun State, the group has salt factories at Apala and Calabar, a polypropylene bagging factory which produces required bags for its products, over 600 trailers for efficient distribution network and goods meant for export can also efficiently be transported to the ports. A vehicle leasing unit with over 100 fully air-conditioned commuter buses is also part of the Dangote Group. It is also into real estate with luxury flats and high-rise complexes in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Abuja, and Kano. Dangote Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the group where yearly he spends millions for worthy causes such as contributions to educational and healthcare institutions, sinking of boreholes and giving of scholarships. The Dangote Group has nationwide staff strength of 12,000 but on completion of on-going projects, it is expected to hit 22,000.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s business success was influenced by various factors. He seems to be broad-minded. Unlike some people, his Personal Assistant is Yoruba while his Head of Corporate Affairs is a Christian from Delta State. In this encounter, Dangote talks about his driving force in business, the factors that have kept him above his contemporaries in business, his $800 million cement factory at Obajana, Kogi State and the N14 million mega-companies which he and some industrialists have set up. Perhaps above all, his patriotic stance is commendable: “If you give me today $5 billion, I will not invest any abroad I will invest everything here in Nigeria. Let us put heads together and work.” H said. As a self-employed person, with minimum basic education, he proves that business success can be through determination, honesty, and perseverance; and not necessarily by acquiring Harvard-Oxford certificates or First-Class academic qualification. His managerial skill must surely be the envy of economic professors. Instead of stashing his funds in foreign accounts, a common feature of fraudulent front and public office looters, Dangote invests wisely in the productive sector of the Nigerian economy.
To deny that Dangote does not have monopoly over some of the commodities in the Nigerian market is to deny the obvious. Recently he and other notable Nigerians announced their desire to float a private sector mega company with the name Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (TCN), which amongst other things may acquire government-owned refinery, operate strategic state-owned cosy and pioneer status in Agriculture and IT.
Dangote Group is fully involved in Corporate Social Responsibility activities, thereby necessitating the setting up of the Dangote Foundation, which oversees implementation of this objective. The Foundation intervenes in the areas of health, education, and empowerment. The Foundation is also involved in providing humanitarian aid to victims of natural disasters. The Dangote Group has resolved to touch the lives of Nigerians and is committed to complementing the Government's initiatives in making the economy private. Nigeria is a land of abundant opportunities and Dangote Group is today a testimony of successful and rewarding private entrepreneurship.
A few recent Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives include:
Dangote donates $2.6m to flood victims, women in Kogi. Dangote donates N100m to Sokoto flood victims Dangote Foundation donates N120m to fight famine in Niger. Dangote Foundation donated $2m to Pakistan's floods victims. Plus many education, training and states and national development program throughout Nigeria.
1.4. His innate qualities.
To understand the innate driving force within this man, it is especially important to start visualizing the spiritual essence he must have possessed. To attempt looking at this inner essence, let us explain it in the following order:
Spiritual Essence is what I refer to as, his individual energy-spirit in its purest form.
In other words, it is the 'vital awareness' that has allowed him to know that he exists. The journey of finding and maintaining that pure form is accomplished by experiencing love, extending love, compassion, patience, and understanding, not only for themselves, but for those around him. He has uncovered his Spiritual Essence through the development and manifestation demonstrated by state of his awareness. Spiritual awareness is the journey of discovering who we are as transcendental beings, gaining insight as to our creation, and establishing a path to follow as we proceed through the school of Life. It is through life lessons we experience and learn from that we are ultimately able to answer the eternal question.
Our brother Alhaji Aliko Dangote by his whole dedication to improving the lives of his fellow human beings not only within the Nigeria nation but also in Africa and other parts of the world is engaged in the answer to the eternal question. Some people just like myself, must have been asking as what is the rationale behind his donation to take care of the disaster occurring as far a country as Pakistan instead of using that money to increase his supports in Nigeria or Africa. But you see, the spiritual essence in him continues to reawaken the human sympathy over their afflictions. We are lucky to have a ‘’child born’’ to us in Nigeria in the person of Alhaji Dangote. Now that the African mothers are beginning to produce people of this nature, our world will begin to experience a new dimension in all directions.
Indeed, what he is doing right now is not only creating jobs and new opportunities for the younger generations of Nigerians he is also setting up wonderful legacy of role model. In effect, he is influencing numerous self-made entrepreneurs to begin to stretch their minds towards the development of Nigerian youths. By so doing the youths will begin to abdicate from the hand to-mouth-economy and disengage in an arm rubbery, begin to refrain from the abduction, kidnapping and picking-pocket syndrome...
