GOAL-SETTING
Chapter One

A Fresh New Perspective
“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
∌ Wayne Dyer
What is it about successful people that sets them apart from everyone else? If you have ever wondered how they can achieve success with ease while others struggle or, worse yet, never seem to get anywhere, you’re not alone. The simple fact is, most successful people are motivated by a goal-oriented mindset. They possess an intense desire to reach a goal or objective that they personally define as the essence of their success. Successful people know that the way to reach an objective is to set clear goals that support those objectives, and then they do something every day that takes them closer to their desired achievement.
Goal: /gƍl/: an aspiration, an object or condition of your desire to accomplish, achieve, or receive.
Your ability to achieve is based on a fundamental philosophy of effective goal-setting backed by action. Setting goals is an absolute essential element in the rituals you must establish in order to achieve any meaningful level of success. In fact, you have probably already experienced the benefits of this philosophy at some point in your life and may not fully realize it. Think about the last time you reached a goal or experienced a victory of some kind. It could have been a time when you saved enough for your first car or passed a difficult exam or landed your first job. Maybe it was the time you finally worked up the courage to introduce yourself to someone special in your life whom you had always wanted to meet. Chances are, you probably thought about it long and hard enough to establish some kind of plan, vision, or mental picture. In fact, it is in the vision that goals have their greatest power.
Vision is a source of energy and inspiration.
Here’s the thing: most people have an aversion to goal-setting. They fail to acknowledge the powerful simplicity of the concept and begin to create excuses why they don’t have the time, energy, circumstances, etc. to “waste” on setting goals. There are generally two schools of thought among these people. While one group believes they should be content with the way things are, the other group is constantly striving for more, and are never truly satisfied with what they have achieved. Both of these mindsets are ineffective because neither will produce the joy or happiness associated with achievement.
If you’re not growing and changing, you’re not happy. True happiness emanates from within. We are happiest when we are growing and improving. Therefore, the achievement of your goals should be such that you are fundamentally changed because of them. Our conscious mind provides essential programming to our subconscious mind, which, in turn, ignites a source of energy that stimulates ideas leading to insight, inspiration, and the compelling emotional forces of change. Clearly defined goals transform desires from fleeting thoughts to inspiring possibilities. Careful contemplation of our goals leads to real and lasting change we read about, hear about, and witness in the lives of those enjoying the richness of this powerful philosophy. Isn’t it time you joined them?
To be clear, a goal is not a strategy. A goal is a desire, coupled with an intent, to achieve something. The manner, practices, procedures, and strategies you will use to achieve your goals are not prerequisites for you to have a goal. In other words, you don’t have to know how before you know why. Knowing why you want something is an absolute must and is a driving force to your ultimate goal achievement. In this chapter, you will learn the essential steps to successfully mapping the course to your personal gold mine. Knowing why you want something is the only prerequisite to getting started on these essential steps.
You don’t have to know how before you know why.
Never underestimate your ability to achieve your dreams and aspirations. You have more ability to achieve them than you most likely believe. In fact, your probability of success increases significantly when you use goals to reach your dreams and aspirations. Why then do so many people fall short of their true potential when it comes to attaining their dreams, goals, and objectives?
The key to attainment is in the knowing. For, if we do not know where it is we are going, or just what it is we desire, how will we ever develop a clear path to achievement, attainment, and success? Herein lies the essence of effective goal-setting. Consider the following short story to support this mindset.

A State of Mind
Several years ago, on an extremely hot day, a crew of men were working on the roadbed of the railroad when they were interrupted by a slow-moving train. The train ground to a stop and a window in the last car—which incidentally was custom-made with air conditioning—was raised.
A booming, friendly voice called out, “Dave, is that you?” Dave Anderson, the crew chief called back, “Sure is, Jim, and it’s really good to see you.” With that pleasant exchange, Dave Anderson was invited to join Jim Murphy, the president of the railroad, for a visit. For over an hour, the men exchanged pleasantries and then shook hands warmly as the train pulled out.
Dave Anderson’s crew immediately surrounded him as one of the men expressed astonishment that he knew Jim Murphy, the president of the railroad, as a personal friend. Dave then explained that twenty years earlier he and Jim Murphy had started to work for the railroad on the same day. One of the men, half-jokingly and half seriously asked Dave why he was still working out in the hot sun and Jim Murphy had gotten to be president. Rather wistfully Dave explained, “Twenty- three years ago, I went to work for $1.75 an hour and Jim Murphy went to work for the railroad.”
Each of us is inherently programmed by a number of internal and external factors that form the basis of who we are and what we desire from life. We are as different and unique as each and every other human being on this earth, yet we have similarities that connect us to each other and to everything imaginable. In other words, each of us, as unique as we are, is an integral part of the entirety of life as we know it. This interconnectedness serves as a catalyst that provides powerful forces, which we can use to create individual experiences that form the basis of our dreams, goals, aspirations, and desires. We see and experience things physically, emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually because of the powerful nature of this concept. The enormity and existence of the concept is all too often misunderstood, taken for granted, or not considered at all. Why?
Most often, it is a mere lack of awareness that prevents us from seeing beyond a unilateral perspective where we are at the center of the universe. This “selfish” perspective hinders our ability to realize how all things exist as a vital part of each other and that we are but one aspect of the entirety.
Aside from the natural creations of God, everything you see around you began as an inspirational thought in the mind of someone. Manmade creations support the belief of our inherent tendency to not only survive but to thrive in a world where we must all coexist. It is the natural creations that remind us of the awe-inspiring nature of how we are all connected. These things serve to align us with the wonder of it all and remind us of the importance of focus and the absolute purity of a moment in time. It is there where we gain our greatest strength and inspiration for creativity. It is there where dreams, desires, and aspirations are born through the imaginative processes we all possess.
The creations of man, coupled with the natural creations that surround us, serve as influencing factors that form the basis of our desire for achievement. As we align the experiences of the external world with our internal minds and the wisdom we possess, we begin to discover our calling, our passions, and our desire to transform ourselves from who we are, to who we wish to become.
If you’re the type of person who is still searching for your calling, rest assured, you’re not alone. The fact that you are searching is encouraging because, whether you realize it or not, you are projecting an energy into the world that will bring you exactly what you seek. So
be careful what you ask for, because you will most certainly get it.
Before we get to the actual mechanics of setting and achieving goals, we should note that very few people reach their goals without first creating the conditions to receive that which they seek.
Focus
Your internal thoughts drive the perspective of how you perceive our external world. The lens from which you peer through is something you control. If you have ever used a pair of binoculars you know all too well that they require an adjustment of the lens to bring clarity to the objective. Your mind works in a similar fashion. You may not have a clear idea on the exact nature of your goals at first, but with a little patience and some focus of the lens of your introspection, you gain increasing clarity.
Do you truly believe you are capable of creating a goal so compelling that you will see it come to fruition? If so, you won’t be surprised as you begin seeing your goal come into focus by employing the principles contained in this book. As your goal comes into focus, your ability to refine it, build it, and ultimately realize it is evidenced by the changes that take shape in your life, bringing you into alignment with achievement.
Most of our thought processes are driven, in large part, by two emotions: a desire to gain something or a desire to protect something. With every decision comes an internal evaluation of what the results of our decisions will bring to us or how it will protect us. We quickly evaluate whether acquiring something we desire is worth acting upon or avoiding altogether. The current position of our lives has largely been defined by the manner in which we generally approach these kinds of decisions and speaks to the mindset we have developed as a result of how we perceive things.
One of the most powerful tools we have as human beings is the power of choice. We can choose to see things positively or negatively. Are your goals positively defined, firmly rooted in a belief that you can indeed attain them? Or have you been taking a more cynical approach, choosing instead to focus more on the negative aspects of everyday issues and circumstance while blaming everyone and everything else for your current situation? The manner in which you frame your specific situation determines your focus and the likelihood of your outcome.
I have been a student of success philosophies most of my adult life. One of the most profound aspects I have discovered along my journey is the common traits that exist among successful people. Successful people are different, which is not to insinuate that their difference is unattainable by any s...
