En este libro se habla del transcurrir de la vida de un ser de orígenes burgueses (la familia Antonio Maura), hijo de un jurista, intelectual y diplomático de la República (José María de Semprún Gurrea) que tienen que exiliarse de su país y después de haber pasado por Francia, Suiza, Holanda regresa a Francia donde es detenido por la Gestapo e internado en el campo de concentración de Buchenwald. Después de su liberación ingresa en el Partido Comunista, llegando a ser, con el paso del tiempo, Ministro de Cultura del Partido Socialista de España (PSOE). Logró ser un escritor reputado e intelectual reconocido, sobre todo por tratar en sus libros los temas de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los Campos de Concentración y la trayectoria del Partido Comunista en general y en particular del de España (PCE).
