Die Abhandlung geht der Entwicklung des westlichen Freiheitsbegriffs nach und betrachtet, wie die tradierten Ordnungssysteme griechisch-antiker (Entelechie) und christlich-mittelalterlicher (Providentia) Herkunft durch die protestantische Aufklärung erschüttert wurden. Dafür untersucht der Autor die Folgen des protestantischen Gewissensaufruhrs sowie der europäischen Aufklärung. Diese waren für den deutschen Idealismus in Philosophie und Dichtung (Kant, Goethe, Schiller) Anlass, diskursiv und gestaltästhetisch über die Verwirklichung der Freiheitsidee in einer völkerumspannenden, innen- und außenpolitischen Friedensvorstellung zu reflektieren.
