Inquisition und Gegenreformation hätten den Protestantismus im Keim erstickt. Reformatorisches Gedankengut verbreitete sich tatsächlich weder flächendeckend noch führte es zu konfessioneller Spaltung oder kirchlicher Institutionalisierung protestantischer Gruppen. Und doch übten reformatorische Gedanken Einfluss auf die Kulturen und Literaturen Spaniens und Hispanoamerikas aus.
