Wie wurden Menschenrechte zum erfolgreichen Bestandteil politischer und ideologischer Argumentation während der 1960er und 1970er Jahre? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage untersucht das Buch die Verwendungsweisen von Menschenrechtssprache in der professionellen Sphäre der Politik. Die westliche Integrationszone steht hierbei im Zentrum der Untersuchung, welche die Verwendungsweise von Menschenrechtssprache in politischer Argumentation auf drei Ebenen analysiert: Topoi, Argumente, performative Sprechakte.
Drei historische Ereignisse liefern die Grundlage für die semantische und rhetorische Untersuchung von Menschenrechtssprache im Kalten Krieg. Der Vietnamkrieg dient als Langzeitereignis. Er wird durch den Berliner Mauerbau im August 1961 und den Prager Frühling 1968 ergänzt. Das Buch liefert somit auch einen Beitrag zur Kulturgeschichte der Politik im Kalten Krieg.
Es wird argumentiert, dass die Anerkennung der Menschenrechte als Grundnorm in den 1970er Jahren ohne die Etablierung einer Menschenrechtssprache in den 1960ern nicht möglich gewesen wäre.
