Grundlage der in diesem Band gesammelten Studien ist der überlieferte Bestand an Aufführungsmaterialien des Musiktheaters in Hamburg. Besonderheiten des Stadttheaters gegenüber Hoftheatern betreffen u. a. den Spielplan, das Publikum und die Kritik. Musik im Theater wurde zu verschiedenen, auch politischen, Anlässen als Kommunikationsmittel mit dem Publikum genutzt. Die Bühne diente auch dem Aufbau eines Konzertwesens, dessen Veranstalter und Programme sich allmählich änderten. Die frühe Aufführungsgeschichte und Rezeption des «Freischütz» in Hamburg ist für die seit 1815 ersehnte «Nationaloper» von Interesse. Mozarts Opern hatten eine Sonderstellung im Spielplan. Ihr Erfolg beruhte auch auf ihren Bearbeitungen als «deutsche» Opern. Deren Veränderungen, exemplifiziert am «Dom Juan», erhellen die Erwartungen des Publikums.
