Die biblische Kantate «Abraham and Isaac», ein Werk ĂŒber die Kraft des Glaubens, handelt von dem alttestamentlichen Vater, der bereit ist, auf göttliche Anweisung hin seinen einzigen Sohn zu opfern. Wenn Strawinskys spĂ€te Vertonung sein wahrscheinlich am schwersten zugĂ€ngliches Werk ist, so liegt das weniger am Stoff, der durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch immer wieder AnstoĂ erregt hat, als an der musikalischen Umsetzung. In ihrer kompositorischen Dichte, ihrer extremen Reduktion der Mittel und scheinbaren Emotionslosigkeit gibt sie den Genesis-Text adĂ€quat wieder. Diese nĂŒchtern-herbe Strenge wird noch deutlicher im Vergleich mit dem unmittelbar vorausgehenden Werk ĂŒber die Sintflut («The Flood»). Dem unterschiedliche Stilebenen mischenden Text entspricht hier eine völlig andere Musik: voller Abwechslung, reich an anschaulichen Symbolen. Beide Werke verbindet Strawinskys eigener Umgang mit der Zwölftontechnik, in der sich verselbstĂ€ndigende Hexachorde gleichberechtigt neben die Ganzreihen treten oder diese in den Hintergrund drĂ€ngen.
