In questa nitida e rigorosa ricostruzione rivivono, con intenso realismo e tensione drammatica, due vicende di storia giudiziaria e criminale che scossero le terre caiatine agli inizi del XVIII secolo e che rievocano trame e atmosfere degne del romanzo manzoniano. La prima è la vicenda di un omicidio che diventa dramma legale, simbolo degli intrighi e dell'arroganza del potere, del malaffare, del familismo amorale, di torbide connivenze, di vendette e ritorsioni e soprattutto di una lotta angosciosa per la verità e la giustizia, in una ragnatela che avviluppa strettamente vittime e persecutori, potenti, ecclesiastici e popolani. La seconda è la breve, violenta cronaca di una spregiudicata e brutale scorreria, che culmina nella liberazione e nella fuga da Caiazzo di tre criminali. Tormentate vicende la cui soluzione, per la perdita di preziosi atti processuali negli ultimi anni del regno borbonico, rimane tuttavia incompiuta.
