Solo una volta, però, si rivolse direttamente ai fiorentini, con una lettera pubblica in latino datata al marzo del 1311, quando l'imperatore Enrico VII era in viaggio verso Roma per esservi incoronato. Il libro ricostruisce lo spazio politico della penisola nei primi anni del Trecento, a partire dal messaggio che l'esule Alighieri rivolse ai suoi concittadini scellerati. In questo caso l'Ytalia messa in questione non fu una creazione poetica a posteriori, ma una esortazione concreta ad agire subito per il bene comune.
