Anni '80. Un giovane tecnico milanese viene assunto dalla Energy Oil e inviato a lavorare su una piattaforma petrolifera nel mare Adriatico. Una volta arrivato a bordo, in elicottero, scopre turnazioni estenuanti, un lavoro di estrema pericolosità, spazi angusti e convivenza difficile tra i lavoratori. Un non-luogo dove possono nascere profonde amicizie, terribili rivalità e invidie pericolose. Scoprendo che la maggior parte dei giovani lavoratori sono assunti con contratti di lavoro precario e soggetti al ricatto dei padroni del petrolio, Marco Radelli intraprende un percorso di impegno personale militante. Eletto delegato sindacale della piattaforma Camaleonte II, e divenuto attivista di un'organizzazione della sinistra extraparlamentare, dimostra l'illegittimità dei contratti di lavoro sottoscritti anche dalle stesse organizzazioni sindacali... Intanto, uno strano personaggio sbarca in incognito sull'impianto mentre è in arrivo una terribile tempesta. Durante la notte un tecnico della piattaforma cade in mare e affoga. In attesa delle autorità, bloccate dal maltempo, Radelli indaga sulla misteriosa morte del collega…
