The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela

About this book

The death of Winnie Madikizela Mandela on 2 April this year unleashed a hailstorm of opinion. On one side, her legacy was cast by the media and public in the shadow of her sanctified ex-husband. Winnie was history's loser. She was damaged goods; Nelson Mandela was whole and pure.

A younger generation, in particular women, took a different view and so a battle of ideas began that sought to reframe Winnie's career and reclaim her identity as an extraordinary woman and fierce political activist.

Sisonke Msimang, an acclaimed author and public commentator, wasted little time in jumping into the fray. And when the dust settled, what emerged is this short but razor-sharp book which reflects critically on the turbulent yet remarkable life of Winnie. Msimang situates her political career and legacy in the contemporary context, what she means today in social and political terms, by exploring different aspects of her iconic persona.

The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela is an astute examination of one of South Africa's most controversial political figures, of the rise and fall – and rise, again, – of a woman who not only battled the apartheid regime, but the patriarchal character of the struggle itself. In telling Winnie's story, Msimang shows us that activism matters, and that the meaning of women's lives can be reclaimed.

INTRODUCTION: A WOMAN IN FULL
1.Madikizela-Mandela, W (2014) 491 Days: Prisoner Number 1323/69. Ohio University Press, Athens, OH.
2.Stompie Seipei was a 14-year-old boy who was killed in or around Winnie Mandela’s Diepkloof home in January 1989. In 1991, Winnie was acquitted on murder charges but convicted of kidnapping Seipei and sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. The sentence was suspended on appeal and Winnie never served time for the abduction.
3.Harry Gwala was a trade-union organiser who had strong ties in the Midlands of what is now known as KwaZulu-Natal. He spent 15 years on Robben Island, where he reportedly clashed frequently with Nelson Mandela on tactics regarding liberation. In the 1980s and 1990s, Gwala led the ANC’s campaign against the Inkatha Freedom Party. He famously and publicly threatened to kill Inkatha warlords in 1992 at a delicate time in the transition to democracy. Gwala was strongly opposed to some of the transitional arrangements negotiated by the ANC, and was eventually temporarily suspended from the South African Communist Party in 1994.
4.Lolo Sono was severely assaulted at Winnie Mandela’s Diepkloof residence and killed by Jerry Richardson, Winnie’s close confidant.
5.The death of Dr Asvat was thoroughly investigated. While members of his family were suspicious of Ma Winnie, the two men who were sentenced to hang for the murder, Zakhele Mbatha and Thulani Dlamini, insisted their crime had nothing to do with her. According to a member of the apartheid police, attempts to bribe them to change their stories were unsuccessful. No link has ever been established between Dr Asvat’s death and Winnie Mandela.

10.In 1986, shortly after Winnie Mandela was called on to mediate a conflict in Soweto, a large group of young men began to accompany her whenever she attended public functions. Many of them lived in and around her home, and offered her personal protection, serving as bodyguards and errand boys. Over time, they came to be known as the Mandela United Football Club. The ‘coach’ and supervisor of the Football Club was Jerry Richardson, who was implicated in the murder of Stompie Seipei.
