Über die Umweltwirkungen des Zuckerrübenanbaus wird in der Gesellschaft zunehmend diskutiert. Um die Diskussion zu versachlichen, ist eine wissenschaftlich belastbare Analyse des Anbaus in der Praxis erforderlich. Im Rahmen der Arbeit werden die Intensität des Zuckerrübenanbaus und die möglichen Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt mit Hilfe von Umweltindikatoren untersucht. Als Datengrundlage für die Analyse dient eine Befragung zum Zuckerrübenanbaubau 2004 in 109 landwirtschaftlichen Betrieben in Deutschland. Die Indikatoren beziehen sich auf die Anbaumaßnahmen Bodenbearbeitung, N-Düngung und Pflanzenschutz. Zusätzlich wird mit einer Energiebilanz die Intensität der Anbaugestaltung analysiert. Insgesamt liegen die abgeleiteten Umweltwirkungen zum größten Teil im tolerablen Bereich. Im Vergleich zum Anbau um 1985 (Ex-Post-Betrachtung) sind die Umweltwirkungen deutlich optimiert worden. Auch für die nächsten Jahre bis 2020 (Prognose) ist eine weitere Verbesserung zu erwarten.
