German–English verb list

On the following pages you will find approximately 3000 German verbs, with their meanings and the number of the model verb they follow. If the number is in bold print, the verb is one of the 201 presented in full.
Some verbs have two or more numbers. If so, the first number refers to the main pattern verb, the second to a verb that shares a particular characteristic. For example, anerkennen is cross-referred to kennen, but also to anbieten because it is a separable verb.
If * appears next to a verb, this indicates that the verb goes with sein in compound tenses; if not, it goes with haben. If there is a † next to the verb, that verb can take sein or haben.
All of the verbs on the list are weak unless they have str. (strong) or mx. (mixed) next to them, in which case their vowel changes are given, e.g. erfinden (str. i, a, u).
If | appears in the middle of a verb, e.g. mit | nehmen, the verb is separable and the prefix will sometimes be placed at the end of the sentence.
ab | bauen tr. demolish, reduce 10, 200
ab | bestellen tr. cancel 18, 200
ab | bezahlen tr. pay off 22, 200
*ab | fahren (str. À, u, a) intr. leave, depart 1
