Fundador da revista francesa Cahiers du Cinéma, o crítico esteve na linha de frente da produção cinematográfica do período, convivendo com cineastas como os jovens Jean-Luc Godard, Eric Rohmer e François Truffaut, seu filho adotivo. Mais tarde, os cineastas dessa geração tomariam Bazin como mentor da nouvelle vague. A presente edição reune 36 textos de André Bazin, bem como uma apresentação e um apêndice assinado pelo crítico e professor de cinema Ismail Xavier, que dá conta da influência bazaniana na teoria e crítica de cinema em nosso país, em especial, personificada na figura de Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes.
