Max Hoffmann (1869 - 1927) ist eine in der heutigen Zeit weitgehend vergessene Persönlichkeit des Ersten Weltkrieges. Während der gesamten Kriegsdauer 1914 bis 1918 an der Ostfront eingesetzt, hatte Hoffmann allerdings entscheidenden Anteil an der Schlacht von Tannenberg (1914) und weiteren Operationen des Oberkommandos Ost. 1916 stieg er zum Generalstabschef des Oberkommandos Ost auf und war damit praktisch der operative Befehlshaber des größten Teiles der Ostfront. Die russische Revolution Ende 1917 führte zum Waffenstillstand und anschließenden Friedensverhandlungen von Brest-Litowsk, bei denen der nunmehrige Generalmajor Hoffmann wiederum eine Schlüsselrolle spielte.Bei Kriegsende 1918 umgab Max Hoffmann der Nimbus eines unbesiegten Heerführers. Wegen seines Widerstandes gegen den Versailler Vertrag 1919 aus dem Dienst verabschiedet, führte er in der Weimarer Republik eine Art militärischen Salon und verfasste eine Reihe militärischer Schriften. Er entwickelte den Plan einer Militärintervention in Sowjetrussland zum Sturz des bolschewistisch-sowjetischen Regimes und der anschließenden Herstellung eines großeuropäischen Wirtschaftsraumes. Von seinen Zeitgenossen wurde Hoffmann sehr kontrovers beurteilt und genoss teilweise im Ausland größere Beliebtheit als in Deutschland selbst.Die vorliegende Biographie zeichnet das Leben und Wirken von Max Hoffmann nach. Sie zielt vor allem darauf ab, wesentliche Faktoren und Ereignisse darzustellen, die den Werdegang des Offiziers und Generals im Kontext seiner Aufgaben und seiner Zeit erfassen und verstehbar machen.
