14 Mix and Automation

There’s the stage, and on the stage the group playing, this is easy.

In front of the stage there is a very recognizable professional figure: the sound engineer! He is usually the one dressed badly, sitting on a stool, next to a thing all knobs and buttons that the most cultured recognize as a Mixer. While the group plays and everyone is happy, he remains with a neutral expression. He's already thinking about all the stuff he's going to have to reload in the van.

During the sound check rehearsals, before the venue opened:

Sound engineer:"Go drums ... now just bass ... bass and drums ... ok guitar ... good ... try your voice" ...The song was coming out fine but ...

Singer:"Can you raise my voice a bit? ... I can't hear my voice ... raise my voice a little more ... ok, perfect"

Sound engineer: "Do you also want some guitar and bass?"

Singer: "No!"

Sound engineer: "Can you play me a piece all together?"... 5 seconds pass and…

Singer:"I can't hear my voice, can you raise my voice?"

Instead of one speaker, the bass player has two on top each another, as high as a refrigerator. The guitarist has an amplifier that if you move it he’ll kill you ... The drummer, thin ... nervous ... beats like a beast on the cymbals and unloads machine guns from the bass drum and snare drum at an absurd volume. With ringing ears what does the bass player say? "Raise the volume"!

If the drums are pulling the plaster off the walls, if the bass has pealed the back of your neck, if the voice is blowing the tweeters and you have no more volume to give to the rest ...You’ll have run out of tears. Everything will sound bad ...

And you’ll be deaf!

Yes ... It really happened to me, it's a true story!

We will start the mix with balance ... and with no musicians around!

Drums ... then bass ... then bass with drums ...
