Reflexes of the Feet: Indications & Techniques
  • Supporting hand positions
    • Upper Foot Support: Place fingers and palm of supporting hand on dorsal side of foot near the top. Place thumb on plantar surface across the ball of foot
    • Upper Foot/Toe Support: Same as the Upper Foot Support hold, but with fingers behind toes and top of foot, and thumb across base of toes
    • Heel Hold: Hold or rest heel on palm
    • Fist Support: Use a loose fist to support plantar surface of foot while working on dorsal surface
  • Direction of movement for feet
    • Lateral to Medial: Moving from little-toe side toward big-toe side
    • Medial to Lateral: Moving from big-toe side toward little-toe side
    • Up: Moving toward toes (distal)
    • Down: Moving toward ankle/heel (proximal)
Cardiovascular System Reflexes
  • Heart: Strengthens heart; helps with heart conditions, hypertension, palpitations, anxiety, worry, fear, depression, sadness
NOTE: Contraindicated with pacemakers or severe heart conditions
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and thumb-walk heart reflex area in medial to lateral rows
    • Dorsal: Support upper foot and single, double, or multi finger-walk heart reflex area in horizontal rows
  • Chest: Supports heart and cardiovascular system by relaxing and opening the chest, relaxing breathing, and improving circulation
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and pull toes back slightly; thumb-walk entire chest area in vertical rows from diaphragm line to base of toes
    • Dorsal: Use supporting hand to place loose fist against plantar surface of upper foot (push in slightly to open/expand chest reflex on dorsal side). Then single, double, or multi finger-walk entire chest reflex from base of toes to diaphragm line
NOTE: The cardiovascular system is distributed throughout the body and is therefore treated when other reflex areas are worked
Digestive System Reflexes
  • Esophagus: Reflux, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, GERD
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and thumb- or finger-walk down reflex
    • Dorsal: Support upper foot and finger-walk down reflex
  • Liver: Supports liver functions (e.g., producing bile, detoxifying the blood, metabolizing toxins, storing glucose); helps with hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, detoxing, high cholesterol
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and flex foot back slightly to open liver reflex, then thumbwalk entire reflex area, making several horizontal rows
    • Dorsal: Use supporting hand to place loose fist against plantar surface of mid-foot. Then single, double, or multi finger-walk entire reflex area, making several horizontal rows
  • Gallbladder: Difficulty digesting fats, gallstones, indigestion, jaundice
    • Right Plantar: Support upper foot and flex foot slightly to open reflex area. Then apply press and circle, hook and back-up, or rotate on point techniques
    • Right Dorsal: Support upper foot and lightly press and hold or press and circle on reflex point with index finger
  • Stomach: Indigestion, peptic ulcers, abdominal distention, nausea, vomiting, belching, stomachache, gastritis
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and flex foot back slightly to open stomach reflex area. Then thumb-walk starting at diaphragm line, making several medial to lateral passes over reflex area
    • Dorsal: Use supporting hand to place loose fist against plantar surface of mid-foot. Then single, double, or multi finger-walk entire reflex area, making several horizontal rows
  • Pancreas: Indigestion, stomachache, gas, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, diabetes
NOTE: Use caution when working on individuals with diabetes
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and flex foot back slightly to open reflex, then thumb-walk over reflex area medially to laterally several times
    • Dorsal: Hold heel and finger-walk medially to laterally over reflex
  • Duodenum: Indigestion, abdominal distention, gas, belching, duodenal ulcers
    • Plantar: Support upper foot and flex foot back slightly to open reflex, then thumb-walk over reflex area, making several medial to lateral passes
    • Dorsal: Hold heel and finger-walk medially to laterally over reflex
  • Small Intestine: Indigestion, abdominal cramps and distention, stomachache, flatulence, enteritis
    • Plantar: Hold heel and thumb-walk starting near waist line, making several medial to lateral horizontal rows. At pelvic line, switch hands and thumb-walk over reflex again in the opposite direction
    • Dorsal: Hold heel and single, double, or multi finger-walk reflex area, making several horizontal rows
  • Cecum/Ileocecal Valve/Appendix: Diarrhea, indigestion, stomachache, flatulence
    • Right Plantar: Hold heel and apply press and circle or hook and back-up techniques on reflex
    • Right Dorsal: Hold heel and lightly press and hold or press and circle on reflex with index finger
  • Large Intestine (Ascending, Transverse, Descending, and Sigmoid Colon): Constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowels, flatulence, abdominal cramps and distention, colitis, hemorrhoids (sigmoid colon)
    • Ascending colon
      • Right Plantar: Hold heel and thumb-walk up reflex toward waist line. Apply press and circle or hook and back-up techniques where the ascending colon bends into the transverse colon
      • Right Dorsal: Hold heel and finger-walk up reflex. Lightly press and hold or press and circle where ascending colon bends into transverse colon
    • Transverse colon
      • Plantar: Hold right heel, and continuing from ascending colon, turn thumb 90 degrees and thumb-walk across transverse colon reflex on right foot. Then support left heel and continue reflexing on left foot medially to laterally. Apply press and circle or hook and back-up techniques where transverse colon bends into descending colon
      • Dorsal: Hold right heel, and continuing from ascending colon, turn finger and fingerwalk across transverse colon reflex on right foot. Then support left heel and continue reflexing on left foot medially to laterally. Lightly press and hold or press and circle where transverse colon bends into descending colon
    • Descending colon
      • Left Plantar: Hold left heel, and continuing from transverse colon, turn thumb 90 degrees and thumb-walk down descending colon reflex toward pelvic line. Apply press and circle or hook and back-up techniques where descending colon bends into sigmoid colon
      • Left Dorsal: Hold left heel, and continuing from transverse colon, turn finger 90 degrees and finger-walk down descending colon reflex. Lightly press and hold or press and circle where descending colon bends into sigmoid colon
    • Sigmoid colon
      • Left Plantar: Hold left heel, and continuing from descending colon reflex, thumb-walk al...
