The Otterhound - A Complete Anthology of the Dog

About this book

The deep-voiced, web-footed hound of the English rivers, described while the packs were still hunting.

The Otterhound - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers breed chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1879 onwards, among them Vero Shaw's The Illustrated Book of the Dog (1879), Robert Leighton's The New Book of the Dog (1907) and A. Croxton Smith's About Our Dogs. Their subject is a rough-coated scent hound first shown at Leeds in 1861 and worked in packs on river otter, a sport already old when these writers were young.

Hunting ended in 1978, and the breed is now on the Kennel Club's Vulnerable Native Breeds list - one of the rarest dogs in Britain. These chapters give its points, its nose, its temperament and its great packs, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.

This edition features:

  • Breed chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1879 to the 1930s
  • The hound in its working prime, before the sport ended and the numbers fell
  • Points, nose and temperament, with the histories of the great packs
  • The original photographs of the leading dogs of the era, reproduced throughout
